Port Charlotte Identified Among "Florida’s Most Affordable Beach Towns for Social Security Retirement"

True or Wishful Thinking?

According to a recent FinanceBuzz analysis, several Florida beach towns stand out as places where couples may be able to live primarily on Social Security income due to relatively affordable housing costs and overall cost of living. Among the communities identified are Port Charlotte, Englewood, and Punta Gorda, all located along Florida’s Gulf Coast in Charlotte County.

According to FinanceBuzz:

Port Charlotte: Affordable Waterfront Living

Port Charlotte was identified by FinanceBuzz as one of the Florida communities where housing costs remain more manageable than in many coastal cities. Known for its extensive canal system, boating access, and proximity to Gulf beaches, Port Charlotte offers retirees a laid-back lifestyle without the premium price tags seen in larger metro areas.

Englewood: Quiet Beach Town Appeal

Englewood is a coastal community straddling Charlotte and Sarasota counties. It’s known for its relaxed atmosphere, access to Manasota Key beaches, and strong appeal to retirees who value outdoor recreation, community events, and a slower pace of life. FinanceBuzz notes that Englewood’s relatively modest housing and rental costs help make Social Security-based retirement more feasible compared to many other Florida beach towns.

Punta Gorda: Historic Charm and Walkability

Punta Gorda was also included on the FinanceBuzz list, recognized for its historic downtown, walkable waterfront, and strong sense of community. The city has long been considered a retirement-friendly destination, blending small-city charm with accessible amenities.

Why These Communities Were Identified

The FinanceBuzz study evaluated locations using factors such as median home prices, average rental costs, cost-of-living data, and access to beaches and amenities. While no two households have identical financial situations, the inclusion of Port Charlotte, Englewood, and Punta Gorda highlights Southwest Florida as a region where coastal retirement may remain attainable for couples relying largely on Social Security.

So what do you think?
