Southwest Florida's medical cannabis landscape just got a little more crowded — and Port Charlotte is once again attracting the attention of a major national operator.
RISE Dispensary has officially opened a new location at 1931 Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte, bringing another medical marijuana option to patients in Charlotte County. But this isn't simply another pin being added to the dispensary map.
The Port Charlotte store represents the 23rd Florida retail location for Green Thumb Industries, the Chicago-based cannabis company behind the RISE retail brand.
And when a national company chooses Port Charlotte for its next expansion, it's another indication of just how much this part of Southwest Florida has changed.
Charlotte County isn't standing still. County planning projections anticipate the population exceeding 245,000 residents by 2030 and approaching 300,000 by 2040, with Port Charlotte among the areas expected to experience substantial growth.
More people means more houses, more restaurants, more stores — and inevitably, more demand for healthcare and wellness services.
RISE apparently sees the opportunity.
The new Port Charlotte dispensary serves qualified patients participating in Florida's Medical Marijuana Use Registry program, adding another choice for patients already navigating the state's regulated medical cannabis system.
The store carries products from several of Green Thumb's established cannabis brands, including RYTHM, Dogwalkers, Good Green and Doctor Solomon's.
The selection includes flower, pre-rolls, vaporizers, concentrates, tinctures and topical products available to eligible Florida medical marijuana patients.
But perhaps the more interesting part of the Port Charlotte opening isn't what's sitting on the shelves.
It's the local connection being built around it.
As part of its opening activities, RISE is partnering with The Grateful Veteran, a Florida-based nonprofit focused on helping veterans and first responders navigate health, wellness and medical-cannabis resources.
The organization works to reduce some of the financial and informational barriers veterans encounter when seeking care, including assistance with medical cannabis evaluations, education and access to Florida's medical marijuana program.
That's a particularly appropriate partnership in Southwest Florida, where veterans make up an important part of the community.
So yes, there's a new dispensary on Tamiami Trail. But there's a bigger business story hiding behind the green sign.
Green Thumb Industries has grown into a major multistate cannabis operator, with RISE dispensaries serving markets across the country.
Its decision to continue expanding its Florida footprint — and put its 23rd location here — adds Port Charlotte to a growing list of communities attracting investment from companies that see Southwest Florida's expanding population as an opportunity.
And RISE isn't entering an empty market.
Port Charlotte already has several medical cannabis operators, which means the arrival of another major competitor gives local patients something consumers generally appreciate:

Population hitting 300,000 by 2040 is going to change everything about what this county looks and feels like. Already can't recognize some parts of town from five years ago.
Topicals are what I use for my arthritis and not every dispensary carries a good selection. Hoping this one does. Might stop in and see what they have.

One thing I'd like to know is whether they take insurance or have any kind of discount program. Medical costs add up fast and cannabis is all out of pocket.
PracticalPatrickRISE does have a veterans discount and I believe a financial hardship program too. Worth asking at the counter when you go in. Most dispensaries have something they don't advertise loudly.
More choices is always better as a patient. I used to drive to Sarasota because options down here were limited. That has definitely changed.

I drove past it last week and the place already looked busy. Parking lot had cars so they must have opened quietly before this even came out.

The veteran assistance piece is really meaningful for this area. Charlotte County has a huge veteran population and they deserve easier access to whatever helps them.

My doctor recommended looking into medical cannabis for my nerve pain and I had no idea where to even start. Having more locations nearby makes it feel less intimidating honestly.
Every article about Port Charlotte growth says the same thing. More people, more investment, more opportunity. Been hearing it for years. Still got potholes on every street though.

Is 1931 Tamiami the old Mattress Firm spot? I drive past there all the time and could never figure out what was going in.
Carlos VegaI think that spot had a few different things in it over the years. Could be the one you're thinking of. It's near the shopping center on that stretch if that helps narrow it down.
Good Green and Dogwalkers are decent brands so at least they're stocking some quality stuff. RYTHM products are solid too in my experience.

245,000 people by 2030 is wild to think about. I moved here ten years ago and it already feels completely different from back then.

I already go to a different one closer to my house so probably won't switch but competition is good. Maybe prices come down a little? That would be nice.

The Grateful Veteran partnership is the part that actually matters to me. My husband is a vet and getting him set up with his medical card was such a hassle. Any help cutting through that mess is welcome.
Sandra_PCWe went through that same nightmare when my brother got his card. The paperwork and the fees and the doctor visit costs pile up fast. An organization that helps navigate all that is genuinely useful, not just a nice press release.
23rd Florida location and they picked Port Charlotte. That says something. This town keeps getting underestimated and companies keep showing up anyway.
Rick M.That's kind of the running theme with this area. People outside of it always seem surprised when something notable happens here. Locals stopped being surprised a while ago.
