Blocked field goal attempt becomes turning point |
Port Charlotte left no doubt Friday night, overwhelming North Fort Myers 63-7 in a game that was decided long before halftime.
Quarterback Logan Flaherty orchestrated the rout with a near-perfect performance, tossing five touchdown passes — three to Eli Pearl and two to Dallas Lambert — while the Pirates’ defense and special teams turned in highlight-reel plays of their own.
The tone was set early. After Chavon Lizana intercepted a pass on North Fort Myers’ opening drive, Flaherty wasted no time, connecting with Pearl twice for quick scores to give the Pirates a 14-0 lead within minutes. The Red Knights briefly pushed back, punching in a short touchdown run by Christian Weber and then recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Momentum appeared to swing, but a blocked field goal attempt quickly shifted the tide for good. Ahmad’dra Greene scooped the loose ball and sprinted the other way for a touchdown, sparking a 21-7 advantage that ballooned rapidly.
From there, Port Charlotte’s offense turned clinical. Flaherty added a pair of strikes to Lambert and another to Pearl, while Greene capped the first half with a 42-yard pick-six. At the break, the Pirates held a commanding 49-7 lead, and with the clock running continuously in the second half, the outcome was never in question. Bruce Blanden chipped in two rushing touchdowns after intermission, sealing the blowout victory.
The statistics told the story: Flaherty completed 14 of 16 passes for 265 yards and five scores. Lambert was his top target with eight catches for 145 yards, while Pearl turned four receptions into three touchdowns. On the ground, Blanden and Peter Kalphat combined for over 150 yards in limited action. Defensively, Port Charlotte forced multiple turnovers, including two interceptions by Greene and Lizana.
Beyond the scoreboard, the night carried special significance. At halftime, head coach Jordan Ingman was recognized for reaching his 100th career win, an accomplishment that drew a standing ovation. Ingman, who inherited a struggling program years ago, has since transformed it into a consistent contender.
After the game, Ingman credited his players’ preparation, noting the trust between Flaherty and his receivers was the product of countless offseason hours. Flaherty himself praised his teammates, especially Pearl and Lambert, for making big plays look routine.
For Port Charlotte, the victory showcased not just offensive firepower but also the depth and resilience of a team eyeing bigger goals later in the season. |
