At Last, Relief in Sight for Kings Highway Drivers
For years, drivers along Kings Highway (CR 769) have shared the same daily ritual. Brake lights. Bottlenecks. A slow crawl north toward the Charlotte–DeSoto County line .
What was once a quiet two-lane road connecting communities has steadily transformed into one of the region’s most frustrating choke points. As Port Charlotte , Lake Suzy and surrounding areas have grown, traffic volumes have climbed — and the highway has struggled to keep up.Potholes and surface wear along this stretch have become a frequent complaint among commuters, further underscoring the need for long-term improvements rather than temporary fixes.
Adding to driver frustration, the section near Sandhill Boulevard has also developed noticeable pavement deterioration in recent years. Now, after years of discussion, planning and public input, long-awaited relief appears to be on the way.
Charlotte County and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) are moving forward with coordinated projects that will widen Kings Highway into a continuous four-lane divided corridor, reshaping one of the area’s most heavily traveled routes.
Charlotte County Segment
The first phase will unfold in Charlotte County, where Kings Highway will be widened from Sandhill Boulevard north to the DeSoto County line. The existing two-lane roadway — including the worn and heavily patched areas near Sandhill — will be replaced with a four-lane divided highway designed to improve both traffic flow and long-term roadway durability. Plans call for:
The corridor also serves as a designated hurricane evacuation route, making capacity improvements critical during storm season. Construction bids were opened on Jan. 14, 2026, and the Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners awarded the contract at its Feb. 10 meeting.
If approved as anticipated, work could begin as early as May. The county’s portion of the project carries a price tag of $10.56 million and is projected for completion by the end of 2027.
FDOT Extension into DeSoto County
The widening will not stop at the county line. To the north, FDOT is finalizing plans for a 1.2-mile extension that will continue the four-lane expansion into DeSoto County , ending at SW Glenadine Avenue . FDOT recently held public meetings to discuss proposed median adjustments and drainage improvements designed to accommodate increased traffic volumes.
While Charlotte County is expected to break ground first, FDOT anticipates beginning construction on its segment in 2027, creating a seamless connection once both projects are complete. When finished, the combined efforts will eliminate one of the region’s most persistent traffic bottlenecks — and address long-standing pavement concerns along the corridor. Drivers traveling between Port Charlotte and DeSoto County will experience a smoother, safer and more reliable commute.
And for the thousands who inch along Kings Highway each day — carefully navigating congestion and dodging rough pavement near Sandhill — the promise of four open lanes ahead feels like a long-awaited light at the end of the tunnel. |
