Cinderella Season ends in Heartbreak

Port Charlotte falls to Jones in Semifinals

The most successful season in Port Charlotte High School football history came to an emotional close Friday night in Orlando, as the Pirates fell 35-23 to the Jones Fightin’ Tigers in the Class 4A state semifinals.

For a program that had never before reached the state final four, the night was a collision of immense pride and stinging heartbreak. For three quarters, the Pirates stood toe-to-toe with the powerhouse Tigers, even carrying a precarious lead into the final frame, but a fourth-quarter surge by Jones ultimately ended Port Charlotte’s dream of a state championship appearance.

The game opened at a breakneck pace, a true battle of wills that saw Jones jump out to an early 14-10 lead. The Tigers’ speed was evident from the first whistle, but Port Charlotte countered with the disciplined, gritty ground game that had carried them through a historic postseason. By the time the teams retreated to the locker rooms at halftime, Jones held a slim 21-17 advantage, and the game felt like it was balancing on a knife’s edge.

It was in the third quarter that the Pirates truly made their statement. The defense, the backbone of the team all season, delivered a spectacular spark with a "pick-six" interception return that silenced the home crowd and vaulted Port Charlotte into a 23-21 lead. The defense managed to hold the explosive Jones offense scoreless for the entire quarter, and for a moment, it seemed destiny was on the Pirates' side.

However, the fourth quarter belonged to Jones. The Tigers' offense, led by quarterback Dereon Coleman, found a rhythm that Port Charlotte simply couldn't disrupt. Coleman, who finished the night with 278 passing yards and 101 rushing yards, orchestrated two unanswered scoring drives to reclaim the lead. His primary target, DJ Hicks, proved to be a matchup nightmare, hauling in 125 receiving yards and two touchdowns to seal the victory for Orlando.

Despite the loss, the Pirates fought until the final whistle. Junior quarterback Logan Flaherty performed admirably as a dual-threat leader, completing 18 of 34 passes for 215 yards while adding 63 yards on the ground. Elias Pearl capped off his breakout season by finding the end zone twice, accounting for two of the Pirates' three touchdowns, while running back Bruce Blanden churned out 54 hard-fought yards against a stout defensive front.

"We were here to win tonight, we weren't here to play it close," said head coach Jordan Ingman after the game. "But you can't help but be proud of these kids. I couldn't ask for nothing more. We all gave it everything we could."

While the scoreboard didn't favor them, the 2025 season will be remembered as the year Port Charlotte shattered its ceiling. By winning their first-ever regional title and pushing a state powerhouse to the brink, the senior class set a new standard.

Ingman noted that the message to the underclassmen was clear: remember this moment, honor the seniors, and return with the resolve to finish the job next year.
