Matt Devitt was a trusted presence during hurricanes, late-night storms, and moments when accurate information truly mattered. That’s why his sudden departure from WINK News has left so many people unsettled, confused, and searching for answers.
In the days following Devitt’s firing, unconfirmed sources have informed us of additional details surrounding his exit — claims that, have not been publicly verified by WINK News or confirmed by Devitt himself.
According to these unconfirmed accounts, Devitt was terminated with roughly two months remaining on a five-year contract and received three weeks of severance after nearly ten years of service to the region.
The same sources allege that the decision stemmed from a dispute involving scheduling flexibility after the birth of Devitt’s child. We are told Devitt took additional time during dinner breaks to assist his wife with their child and requested a modified schedule that would allow him to arrive earlier and leave earlier — a request that was reportedly denied.
The accounts further claim that management later characterized the situation as insubordination and a contract violation, resulting in Devitt being called into the general manager’s office and terminated on the spot.
The General Manager of WINK News / Fort Myers Broadcasting Company (which owns WINK-TV) is currently Jamie Ricks, who was promoted into the role in March 2024, after previously serving in sales leadership at the station.
Those same unconfirmed sources state that a one-year non-compete agreement is now in effect.
It is important to emphasize that none of these claims have been independently verified by a second source at this time.
What is confirmed is that Devitt’s firing still comes without a public explanation from WINK News. Local and regional outlets have reported on the termination and the overwhelming reaction from viewers, but the station itself has remained silent on the reasons behind the decision. National outlets have also taken note of the backlash, highlighting the strength of public support Devitt has received.
Devitt has begun reconnecting with the community through his new Facebook page, Matt Devitt Weather, where supporters continue to leave messages of encouragement and thanks.
The absence of clear answers has only deepened public frustration. For many viewers, the situation feels less like a routine personnel change and more like a breakdown in transparency — particularly involving a figure who played such a visible role in public safety during major weather events.
